Leading timber frame manufacturer, Frame Wise, is spreading the word on energy-efficient construction by touring the country with a mobile exhibition trailer promoting its innovative wall and floor designs and featuring particleboard flooring from Norbord and engineered I Joists from Boise.
The exhibition trailer is touring England and Wales visiting regional trade exhibitions and making regular stops at merchant outlets en route.
“We have taken part in the usual trade shows in the past, but we wanted something more flexible – something that would get our name out there and raise the profile of Frame Wise and its suppliers” explains Frame Wise Managing Director, Simon Orrells.
“The new mobile roadshow is like a massive billboard which will be seen by thousands of people as it travels up and down the country” he adds.

High performance double-skin panels from timber frame manufacturer, Frame Wise, have been used in the design of a low-energy self-build project in the company’s home town of Presteigne, Powys.
Self-build clients, Richard and Hilary Rimington, employed local architect Don Reed to design a three-bedroom house with industry-beating thermal performance using sustainable materials procured, wherever possible, from local sources.
The house employs Frame Wise’s latest double-panel system for optimum thermal resistance. Launched 18 months ago, this new panel can deliver U-values of less than 0.1W/m²k, making it arguably the warmest open panel timber frame systems currently available.

A fact-finding trip to Germany organised by the UK Timber Frame Association (UKTFA) has helped to identify future options for the timber frame industry, including how Passivhaus design concepts and other benefits of German timber frame construction can be applied to the UK.
The two day study tour at the end of 2008 involved 30 members of the UKTFA. It included factory visits to see Passivhaus schemes and pre-fabricated off-site construction, a presentation on how the very low U-values of the Passivhaus system are achieved and demonstrations of the latest woodworking equipment and automation systems.

Oriented strand board from Norbord, the UK’s leading manufacturer of engineered wood-based panel products, is a major component of the timber frame system used to build the first environmentally-sustainable school in Anglesey.
Ysgol-y-Graig, in Llangefni, sets a new standard of environmental design and sustainability. Designed by the Isle of Anglesey County Council’s property design team, the new £3.7 million school replaces three old schools on the island and is designed for low energy consumption and minimum carbon emissions. frame Built around a sustainable timber frame, the building features solar photovoltaic panels, a wind turbine and a 'green roof' which will provide a natural habitat for plants and insects.
The school is the first to be built by the Authority using a sustainable timber structure which is highly insulated and therefore extremely energy efficient.
